Eating & Drinking & Feasting has been the Christmas Tradition for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. In this modern age, most people have sufficent food & for that we are all grateful. So,at this time of year, do spare a thought for those less well off & access our Christmas Gift Voucher Charity section.

Before the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s, England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales were agriculural societies. Money was not plentiful. The middle classes had not arrived and the vast majority of the people were poor & living hand to mouth. They were totally reliant on good harvests. If these failed famine resulted. If thats not enough, global warming had not been heard of! Indeed, the winters were much colder than now. The River Thames & River Liffey often froze over & Fairs were held on the ice. Central heating & electricty was many hundreds of years away so life was cold. dark & very tough.

In this very difficult & somewhat dismal environment, is it any surprise that Christmas became such an important Mid Winter Festival, celebrating both the birth of Jesus & the feeling that winter was half over & that Spring was beckoning.

The thought of the Yuletime celebrations kept them going through the early part of the winter. Food was husbanded, beer was brewed, mead was fermented & beasts were fattened and excitement grew as the big feasting approached.

And so the people celebrated Christmas in mighty style with Eating & Drinking & Feasting to their heart's content. This tradition is still carried on to this day. Celebrate & enjoy!

Eating & Drinking is still at the heart of our Christmas Festivities. Thats why we have compiled such a comeprehensive selection of Recipes for your pleasure. So give them a go, crack on with the cooking & have a Ball this Festive Season!
