CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

“Deck the halls with boughs of holly” goes the very popular Christmas song and of course, that is exactly what we do as Christmas approaches and we prepare to put up the Christmas decorations. Decorating the house with Christmas decorations is one of the oldest customs of Christmas.

Christmas decorations started in earlier times with bringing evergreens such as ivy, holly and mistletoe into the house to represent the continuance of life through the winter. Red and green were the traditional colours of Christmas decorations - green for the colour of the evergreens and the Christian belief in eternal life and red in memory of the blood Jesus shed for mankind. Modern Christmas decorations incorporate gold and silver colours as well as retaining the more traditional red and green.

The evergreen Christmas decorations were eventually joined by all of the Christmas decorations as we know them today -decorations of foil or paper chains, hanging paper bells, hanging paper Christmas trees, tinsel decorations, lights, decorations of the nativity scene, the christmas stockings to hang on the mantelpiece and snowmen.

There are some wonderful antique Christmas decorations available which are elegant and decorative, symbolizing the gracefulness of earlier times.

Some people like to make their own christmas decorations. This gives a wonderful personal touch to Christmas decorations in the home and these Christmas decorations will be totally unique. If children are involved in making some of the Christmas decorations, it will give them a much more involved feeling in the Christmas activities and a great talking point over the festivities. Christmas stockings can be hand-knitted as part of the Christmas decorations.

The home is not the only place where Christmas decorations proliferate. Coloured lights, LED Isicle Christmas Lights, inflated snowmen, santa claus and reindeer figures and big Christmas trees decorate many town centres and shops, along with artificial snow painted on shop windows.

Christmas decorations play an important role helping to enjoy the rigours of winter as the wonderful lights and decorations cheer up the cold and wet environment for the festive season.

In the past, Christmas decorations were not put up until Christmas Eve. It was considered unlucky to bring evergreens, the traditional item to decorate homes, into the house before that date. In modern Britain, however, most people put up their christmas decorations about a fortnight to a week before Christmas Day. Municipal displays and lighting of town square Christmas trees usually occur around 1st December.

Don't take your christmas decorations down before the end of the 12th Day of Christmas, i.e. the 5th January.

until the 1800s, people kept Christmas decorations displayed until 2nd February. This date was called Candlemas Day and heralded the end of the Christmas season.
